About

 I have been teaching Family and Consumer Sciences for 27 years in Stark and Summit counties in Ohio. In 1995 I earned a masters degree in Early Childhood Education and in 2008 I earned a Reading Certification from Kent State University.

Christie Hickman

     I am passionate about literacy and wrote The ABC's of Reading to Your Child,  a handbook for young parents. I enjoy sharing the importance of family literacy with my students and community organizations.

     For the past thirteen years I've been a GRADS Coordinator, serving pregnant and parenting adolescents at several local school districts. 

     I chaired FLAPEC (Family Life and Parent Educators Coalition) in Akron Ohio and have been a member since 2001. I also served on the Family & Child Development Advisory Council at University of Akron. I'm a member of OATFACS/ACTE (Ohio Association Teachers of Family & Consumer Sciences), AAFCS (American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences), and First Book of Greater Akron. 

I am a breast cancer survivor and organized In This Together with my sister. We provide Hug Blankets to others going through this journey.
